Reading: We are working at building our stamina during Read to Self time. We are learning how to check for understanding when reading by asking, "Who is in the story?" and "What is happening?". The children know how to "Crosscheck" when they are not sure of a word. They ask themselves three questions: Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense? They also know the hand motions to help them remember the three questions.
Writing: We are learning the operations of writing workshop. They have learned how to add to the words, add to the picture and start a new story.
Phonics: We spent a lot of time looking at our names.
Math: We've been counting by 1s (starting at numbers other than 1), 2s, 5s and 10s. Please practice this skill at home with your child. When we start counting money it will make learning that skill easier. We've played monster squeeze and top it. We've completed our first math unit. Look for the assessment in your child's home folder and review it with him/her.
We've spent a lot of time going over classroom behaviors and how to treat each other so we can enjoy coming to school every day.
At Becker Primary we use the words:
BE YOUR BULLDOG BEST!
BE READY, BE KIND, BE SAFE, BE CARING
