November
Conferences will take place November 19 and 20.
Reading
We are working on strategies to improve our accuracy when reading. Your child knows how to cross check (do the words look right, sound right and make sense). We learned to use the pictures. Do the pictures match the words? We are using the beginning and endings sounds to help with accuracy. To help our fluency we are practicing common sight words and learning to reread the text until our reading sounds like our talking.
Writing
We are spending a lot of time on noticing what makes writing readable and unreadable. We are practicing spelling our sight words correctly when we are writing and working on how to spell words that we are not sure of the spelling.
Phonics/Spelling
Each full week of school your child will come home with a list of words. We will be doing all sight words. Our focus is to have the students spell the words correctly when writing and not just for a spelling test.
The spelling schedule Is:
Mondays-Spelling lesson, bring home spelling list, use magnetic letters to practice our spelling words
Tuesdays-Decorate sight words cards to be used at home for spelling practice
Wednesdays-Sight Word Detective
Thursdays-Mix It, Fix It
Fridays- ABC Order and Sentence Writing
Math
Unit 4 will focus on solving number problems, using the number grid, telling time to the quarter hour, money and making money using the fewest coins.
Inquiry
We are working on story elements and learning about the setting, characters, sequence of events and problem.
Important Dates
First Grade Concert - November 15 at 1:30 in the gym

September - Back to School!
We have had a great start to our first grade year. I'm looking forward to a busy and exciting year with a great group!
Parent/Teacher Communication
Please help your child remember to bring their "home" folder to school each day and check for important papers at home each night. It is one of our main forms of communication. A clear plastic home folder may be purchased at school for $1.
Homework
Math: Homelinks will come home about 3 or 4 days each week. They are meant to be a review of what we've studied in the classroom. Please do the homework with your child.
Speak Up!: We will do Speak Up/Let's Talk on Thursday. These are a great opportunity to build oral language skills, confidence speaking in front of a group and storytelling abilities (which is great for development as a writer).
Reading: Please make 20 minutes of daily reading time a habit for your son or daughter at home. Research supports it is the best way to support their progress as a reader. Beginning in late September our kiwi pack will be coming home daily. These books will be at you child's instructional reading level and will have been read with the teacher before coming home. They should be able to read them fairly independently to you. Please remember to enjoy listening to their growing reading skills at night and then send the kiwi pack back to school each day.
